In December 2018, Portugal officially signed an agreement to join China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Following the signing of this agreement, Portugal included their already existing Port of Sines into China’s BRI. This map shows the current and future Portuguese infrastructural elements that will be implemented as a part of the BRI. This map also highlights the role that Portugal plays in the bigger picture of the BRI. Projected maritime connections that China will have due to Portugal’s strategic location are shown. Portugal’s Port of Sines helps serve as a connection to other BRI countries in northern Africa and across the Atlantic.
