In 1895, the Japanese defeated the Chinese in the Sino-Japanese War. As a result, China gave Japan Taiwan as a colony for its loss. During its time of colonization, Taiwan had one of the best relationships with its colonizer compared to the others. It was only after the second World War that Taiwan become a part of the Republic of China once more. 1955, the Kuomintang government fled to Taiwan and have remained there until the present. Therefore, it can be said that the development of Taiwan can be separated into two distinct parts: from 1895-1945 and from 1955-present. The during its development, Taiwan took much inspiration from Japan in its infrastructure and buildings but most importantly its culture and education, a trait you can still see in the present.
