The map presents an overview of the hydroelectric projects in Ethiopia. With abundant water resources, the development of the hydropower resources is critical to Ethiopia’s economy and is also the major interest of China’s investment. China provided assistance to Ethiopia in financing and constructing major hydroelectric dams including Tekeze Dam, Gibe III Dam and Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Other energy projects include electricity transmission network and Ethiopia-Kenya transmission line. China’s involvement in Ethiopia’s hydroelectric project could accelerate Ethiopia’s development in the energy sector and promote economic development. Meanwhile, however, building dams on the major rivers also negatively impact the ecosystem. Controversies about the environmental impacts brought by dams have been the biggest obstacle of Ethiopia’ hydroelectric development.
