This map draws a correlation between discrimination and pandemic response, specifically in the United States of America during Covid-19. Each state is shaded either red, orange, yellow, or green. Red indicates states that are responding very poorly, and there is uncontrolled spread. Orange indicates states with an inadequate response but no uncontrolled spread. Yellow suggests a state is responding but to still take caution. Finally, green indicates states that are responding well and cases are tending to get better. The blue flare dots on the map indicate states with non-discrimination laws and ordinances to tie in the topic of discrimination. These states have statewide laws protecting individuals from experiencing discrimination in specific settings. This map aims to examine if there is a relationship between states that are more progressive and have non-discrimination laws and ordinances, and if these states are doing a better job at controlling the virus’s spread. Discrimination has a tremendous influence on how the general public reacts to the outbreaks of novel viruses. This map is designed to compare states with non-discrimination laws to show if there is any correlation to their reaction and response to pandemics. This illustration will serve to supplement the attached paper that unpacks the correlation between disease and discrimination between the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the Covid-19 pandemic.
