In August of 2018 Uruguay signed onto China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The Uruguay is an important member of China’s initiative due to its high volume of trade with China. China is the number one destination of Uruguayan exports, mainly agricultural commodities like beef and soybeans. This has led the Uruguayan agricultural industry to adapt to their Chinese consumers. Sites such as the Shandong Baoma fish processing facility seek to expand this trade with China. Uruguay is also the first member of Mercosur or the Southern Common Market to join the initiative. Uruguay is the Belt and Roads first stop in this pivotal South American trade bloc.
